The 'Smart Campaign' that is anything but... Smart.
Challenger Vet Hospital’s Google Ads account was set up with the default ‘Smart Campaign’: a set-and-forget approach Google offers new advertisers, but you can quickly waste your money as our client discovered.
An account audit showed the “top performing” keyword was the client’s brand name and the “best” key event was clicks on the phone number.
Essentially, people were searching for Challenger Vet, clicking their sponsored ad, and calling to see if their pet was ready to pick up!
No wonder our client was not getting any new business. Their modest daily budget was being swallowed up by existing clients.


Our smarter keyword and geographic targeting approach
We rebuilt the campaign, removing the brand term and replaced it with highly-targeted non-branded terms like “vet kwinana”.
We also tightened up the geographic targeting to ensure we weren’t showing ads to people who were not prepared to travel to Kwinana.
The results were immediate and continue to improve each year.
